Add Comment New Apprenticeships for Young People in Lewisham Fifteen new Council apprenticeships have been created as part of the Mayor of Lewisham’s action plan to support the local community. The positions are open to young residents aged between 16 to 24 years old and are available in social care, business administration and in customer services. Applications are now open (Monday 14 June) until Wednesday 23 June and those interested should apply via the Lewisham Council website www.lewisham.gov.uk/apprenticeships The Mayor of Lewisham launched the first tranche of the borough’s Apprenticeship Scheme in 2009. These latest apprenticeships aim specifically to create opportunities for young people living in the borough as younger people have been disproportionately affected by the recession. All apprenticeships involve both on-the-job and off-the-job training and will enable them to gain important transferable skills such as working in a team, communications, problem-solving and using new technology. They will also work towards a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at Level 2 or 3. An experienced manager at the Council will support them in the workplace and they will also be assigned a college tutor. Apprenticeships are initially for one year, with an option for a second year, work placement subject to satisfactory performance. The Mayor of Lewisham, Sir Steve Bullock, said: "The real advantage of being an apprentice is that on completion, they will be in a far stronger position to gain a permanent job. Employment opportunities for younger people have been very limited in recent years, but this scheme has made and will make a positive difference to their lives. An apprenticeship can open up all kinds of opportunities for the future." |
