Ofsted has published its report following the recent unannounced inspection of the borough’s Children’s Social Care Services.

The inspection looked at how Lewisham dealt with cases of abuse and neglect and found that its assessments of cases were of good quality, cases were responded to quickly, its out of hours service was very good and that social workers have good training and support.  It also praised the way that social workers worked with other agencies like health and schools to ensure that children are safe.

The Ofsted Inspectors also said that vulnerable children in Lewisham are promptly identified and supported and that this resulted in clear planning and support.  Lewisham was also commended for having a good recruitment and retention policy, which resulted in very low numbers of agency staff.

The inspection team took spot checks on records, looked at supervision notes, and observed staff as they conducted their work.

Frankie Sulke, Executive Director, Children and Young People, said,: “We are very pleased with the findings of the inspection.   We have a truly dedicated team of social workers, managers and support staff.  Their commitment and dedication are second to none.  Day in, day out, they do an incredibly difficult job and I am delighted to congratulate them for the work they do to ensure that our children are kept safe and to respond quickly to concerns raised.   Our social workers make a real difference to the lives and life-chances of our children.”
