A resident brought to our attention an application made by Network Rail to replace its analogue radio systems with a digital communication system. The attachment (bottom) details more information.
"Many residents are concerned that this mast is being erected in a conservation area and an area of beauty, rather than being sited slightly further down the track, where it would be outside the conservation area."
The response from the council after our investigation is as follows:
It relates to a proposed 25 metre high mast installation on Network Rail land at Nunhead junction. Such developments are permitted by way of the allowances afforded to Statutory Undertakers under Part 17 of the General Permitted Development Order, although Councils are required to be notified of such proposals and are given the opportunity to make representations as to issues of siting and design.
Bearing in mind that the siting will fall within the Telegraph Hill Conservation Area and the paperwork submitted could hardly be termed as illustrative the LPA has raised objections and written to Network Rail, accordingly.
Network Rail responded in writing earlier this week (see below) and a more detailed submission will doubtless follow in due course which residents will have the opportunity to comment on.
Network Rail's response:
Thank you for your email below and attachment regarding our proposed railway communications system equipment near Nunhead Junction.
Further to your comments I have requested more detailed drawings of the proposed site and as soon as I am provided with this information I will pass it onto you for your review.
In the meantime, should you have any questions or require further information regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind Regards,
